高速原子間力顕微鏡(高速AFM)と超解像液中AFMを使って、生体分子の構造とダイナミクスを研究している。従来の方法とは異なり、高速AFMは機能している分子の構造とダイナミクスの同時記録を可能とし、それ故、どのように生体分子が働くかの直截的な理解を可能とする。また、超解像液中AFMでは、αヘリックスやβシートといったタンパク質の2次構造をも観察可能であり、タンパク質の構造と機能の関係をより詳細にべることができる。イメージング研究部門は、新メンバー3名の補充により、2011年度中に完成する予定である。

進行中の研究: どのようにして生体分子が働くかを理解するために、高速AFMを使ってダイナミックな生体分子プロセスを研究している。これまでに、アクチンフィラメントに沿って歩くミオシンVや光に応答するバクテリオロドプシンの構造変化などの動的プロセスのイメージングに成功している。ミオシンVI、ダイニン、種々の天然変性タンパク質などの他の分子の動的振る舞いの観察を現在試みている。また、超解像FM−AFMを用いて、物質表面の周りの水和層やタンパク質の2次構造を研究している。細胞に適用できる高速AFMの開発がある程度進んだときには、細胞のAFM観察も行う。
